Kid’s Classes

UTS Judo Classes for Children

Our kids’ judo classes are fun, exciting, and excellent training for all ages. Simply choose the judo class that’s right for your child’s age and ability.

Ages 5-6

In these beginner classes, we teach children how to fall safely, help them improve their balance, and develop contact awareness. We make the classes fun with activities from pillow fights to Big Ball Sumo and even easy crash mat battles.

Our youngest students love it and look at it as play time, even though they’re learning specific skills that they can build on in the future. It’s a great time for everyone – even parents who stop by to see how their child is doing!

With this class level, we build up excitement, engage your child, and get them used to having fun without looking at a screen. This is the first step in teaching them to interact with the real world and it has been hugely successful for us. But what’s most important is the fact that the children love it!

Ages 7-8

At this age level, students will start to learn real judo skills, albeit still with a strong game element to engage the children. A high metric is put on safe falling and how to relax their bodies. This helps them prep for the more advanced classes where contact and falling will be much more common.

This is also the first set of classes where we start giving student grades for their accomplishments. We have found that helping students establish goals they can reach for in the future has been a big success.

The children are aware in these classes that it’s no longer play time – although there’s lots of fun to be had on the mats! They know they are learning the important basic skills that will help them reach the next level – but the moves and concepts are still presented in a fun setting where they don’t have to worry about getting hurt.

Ages 9-10

Now we start getting into teach the children real judo skills that they can use! A strong emphasis is put on throwing and groundwork techniques.

In this level, we make it clear we are no longer playing games. We are building up their skills and teaching them real judo. They will start to get stronger and more focused. We will start putting real work into their balance and other mental skills. It’s a different, slightly more mature kind of fun, where real progress can be seen and there’s much to be proud of at every session.

This is also when out students will start have mini competitions with each other. Everything we teach at this level will be graded, which allows our students and their instructors measure progress. It helps push them to do better and focus on what they are learning now that they are now old enough to understand what they are learning and why.

Ages 11-15

This is when we amp up our training – and our students love it! Building up strength at this age is important, as is training the mind to focus more clearly as so much else begins to happen to your body and mind.

Competition is an important part of the class structure at this level. Students learn advanced judo techniques and can demonstrate them safely and effectively. Throws and groundwork technique are refined, and exercises are learned that will help the student develop the overall body strength they will need to compete.

As the students become older in these classes, you will start to see real results in their behaviour. As young men and women, they will learn respect, how to relate to the world in a positive way, and how to be a good person. When it comes to competition, they will take it seriously and respect a loss as well as a win. These classes are the goal of our judo training for children.
